[Views of salvaged manuscripts after the Capitol fire of 1911] [1911]

Collection consists of two duplicate sets of four images of New York State Library manuscripts salvaged from the ruins of the 1911 New York State Capitol fire. The photos were taken shortly after the March 29 fire by William Berwick, a preservation specialist from the Library of Congress, who came to New York to help the State Archivist, A. J. F. Van Laer, and the State Library with the recovery effort. Captions with the images read as follows: "The folio edition of Audubon's 'Birds of America' as saved from the ruins;" "Manuscripts as received from the ruins, placed on hastily built slat shelves awaiting treatment;" "The same manuscripts, drying, leaf by leaf between heavy blotting papers. The burnt volume which is to be next treated lies on the bench;" and "Some badly burned manuscript treasures. On the top of the truck are some single sheets standing against a sheet of blotting paper: below are some mss. volumes after covers have been taken off, showing burned edges."

8 photoprints (2 sets of 4 items) : b&w ; 8 x 11 cm., 13 x 16 cm. on mount.
